Foster Care 101: Safe Setup for an Unknown Animal

Shelter review planned before launch

How to get your home ready, keep your own pets safe, and write useful daily notes.

01

Keep two doors between them at first

For the first week or so, keep two closed doors between the foster animal and your pets, until a vet says they are clear of anything catching.

02

Write what you see, not labels

Skip words like "jealous" or "stubborn". Write what happened: "Stepped back when the umbrella opened", "Ate dinner without guarding the bowl".

When to call a vet straight away

Call the shelter’s vet if you think there is a fever (over 39.5°C), a squinting eye or green discharge, or a limp that does not ease with rest.
